Strategic Thinking, Planning and Management

Recommend course:

Description

All organisations have a strategy for success. Often, however, that strategy is lost in the day-to-day routine of ‘business as usual’, where immediate decisions do not relate to that overall strategy. Too often, the strategy and the business processes are not synchronised.

This course examines approaches both to thinking strategically by defining the organisation’s long-term desired outcomes and to developing and maintaining strategies and strategic plans by examining alternative approaches and linking them to the means available to achieve the desired outcomes.

The underlying approaches are the same for both the public and the private sectors, but this course will focus on public sector examples and use factors most relevant to the public sector. The focus and the examples can change according to demand.

Who should attend:

The course is suitable for anyone responsible for setting and maintaining long-term goals for their team at any level and for those interested in reflecting on how their task supports wider organisational goals and on how they can ensure their own business activities promote the higher ends. This includes advisors, senior advisors and managers.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand relevant approaches to strategic thinking and the factors that affect them
  • Determine relevant approaches to strategy for different situations
  • Develop strategic plans
  • Relate operational processes to strategic plans

Course outline:

  • Concepts underlying a strategic approach: theory
  • Developing a strategy: theory and practical
  • Maintaining the strategy over time: practical
  • What does it all mean: discussion

Course format:

The course is designed to minimise the theory (although ensuring that all relevant theory is covered) and maximise the practical component through a mixture of exercises and discussion. Examples from participants’ own experiences will be worked through where relevant.
